Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)

Historical Milestones

W. Fleischmann of Universitat Ulm/Donau, Germany, and others, publish the results of NPWT treatment in 15 patients with open fractures. Polyvinyl foam was used in the wounds, covered by a transparent polyurethane dressing. Drainage tubes were connected to a suction device. No bone infections occurred in any of the patients. The authors noted, "efficient cleaning and conditioning of the wound, with marked proliferation of granulation tissue."
